Trey Parker & Matt Stone - GQ by Martin Schoeller, December 2011
Jon Stewart on Matt & Trey:
Many years ago, someone sent me a video in which four boys are asked by Jesus to help him kill Santa. The video was vulgar, hilarious, and oddly touching, and had apparently been made by two nitwits from Colorado. Ever since that day, I have looked forward to anything Matt and Trey produce with a mixture of joy, respect, and a glee that bears more than a passing resemblance to an 11-year-old girl finding out she’s getting a pony. And each time I’m astounded by how vulgar, hilarious, oddly touching, and even brave their stuff is. But through it all, there were always whispers of another project… A mysterious work that would someday appear in the form of a Broadway musical… About Mormons. Classic overreach. No way they pull this thing off. But they do. And it’s incredible. A doctoral dissertation in funny-as-shit satire. A hysterical, full-throated defense of faith that somehow also manages to make perfect sense of a lyric involving eye-fucking God. When you witness a work of such quality—and this is coming from someone who traffics in their field—there is only one thing to say, and I cannot say it emphatically enough: Fuck those guys.
