I really wanted to meet Christian because he’s exciting…I had heard about his fiery off-kick on the McG film…I played the bad guy in this and so I had to do a lot of fighting with Batman…and he is a very handy individual. When I saw him first time, when I got to LA and we were doing the screen test and I was trying on the Bane outfit and I’d put on some weight and I felt strong, I’d been training. And I got to the trailer and I saw Christian sat there and he didn’t have a t-shirt, just a vest on and I looked at his arms and I thought, ‘Yeah, I’m gonna walk this.’ I was like, ‘How are you? Are you good?’ And he was like, ‘How are you Tom?’

“Then I got in my outfit and I went on set…and this huge looming figure turned up on set. About 10 foot tall and eight foot wide with huge pointy ears and I looked at him and he was looking at me as if to say, ‘Yeah, I’m Batman.’ And I looked him in the eyes and I was three. And I couldn’t stop touching the suit, looking for a way in, so I could at least cut him. He’s terrifying Batman, and he looked me dead in the eyes and I thought, ‘I’m never going to be able to survive the onslaught that is Christian Bale, or Batman.’”

According to producers, the line “That’s a lovely, lovely voice” was improvised by Tom Hardy. Bruce Wayne responding “No you’re not” to Catwoman saying she felt sorry for Bruce losing his fortune was also improvised by Christian Bale.
